Summary: Ko Huriawa te taniwha o Ngā Puna o Te Waikoropupū. Mai i taua wā tae noa mai ki tēnei e whakamahi ana a Huriawa i tōna ngoi motuhake kia noho mā tonu ngā arawai. Huriawa is the taniwha of Ngā Puna o Te Waikoropupū. He is the custodian of the waters that extend above and below the earth, across the arid lands of the Mohua region. The story begins with the arrival of Rākaihautū in his Uruao canoe. He fastened the sandy nose of his canoe to Te Tai Tapu, which turned into a network of caves and waterways, and called on Huriawa to come from Parapara Maunga. From that time until now Huriawa has been using his special power to keep the waterways clean.
